TN SR-16 still closed from rock slide; should re-open Friday

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA, TN  (WRCB) -- Tennessee State Road 16 (also known as Rowe Gap Road/Keith Springs Mountain) in Franklin County will remain closed as cleanup from the rock slide earlier this week continues.

The rockslide, which occurred near mile marker 17.7, is also at the same site as an active Tennessee Department of  Transportation rockslide mitigation project.

The $2.4 million project's proximity to the rockslide meant that workers and equipment were close at hand to begin the cleanup process.

Several unstable areas have been discovered adjacent to the slide, prompting additional work to make the area safe for motorists.

Local traffic (cars only) can use the narrow Iron Gap Road as a detour. Truck traffic will not be allowed to use the road, and should seek alternate routes.

TDOT hopes to open the roadway Friday.
