Silverdale student recovering after stabbing

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -- Coach Tim Couch at Silverdale Baptist Academy had no clue one of the victims in a Target store stabbing in Pittsburgh, PA was 16-year-old Allison Meadows, one his own softball players.

"You just don't expect to see family members when you are out of town and go to a target and get attacked."

Police say Leon Walls ran into the store and was followed by two men.

Walls pulled out a knife and grabbed Meadows while she was at the checkout line and used her as a human shield.

Officer pepper sprayed walls several times before arresting him.

Meadows suffered cuts to her arm, back, and a collapsed lung.

"Naturally when someone has been stabbed you just hope and pray they are going to get through it."

Principal Mickey Hammel says, "I made a few phone calls to find out what happened. It's one of those things you don't want to be true but when it is you start praying immediately."

This is the second tragedy the school he has dealt with in the past few years. Last year a student was killed after a car crash.

Hammel says word spread like wildfire on social media sites like Facebook and twitter.

Silverdale's Facebook page has hundreds of well wishers and early Monday morning Meadows was tweeting from her twitter account.

"It is more of the norm and I don't mean that to be prideful but it goes back to who we serve and these families. I received many calls last night."

Her family expects a full recovery.

Walls is being held on a $250,000 bond and facing several charges including attempted homicide.
