Disabled former police captain ejected from bar

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Police in Memphis say bouncers at a sports bar physically ejected a disabled and retired Germantown police officer, apparently after mistaking his speech impairment for intoxication.

Security guards at Jack Magoo's Sports Bar and Grill called police about 9 p.m. on March 14 and said Brian Roper was drunk, causing a disturbance and refused to speak to the barkeeper.

The Commercial Appeal reported police arrived to find Roper outside the bar with cuts and bruises. He used a preprinted card and a notepad to explain he has the neurological disorder aphasia. The condition inhibits communications skills.

The bar issued a statement, saying it has hired an independent investigator to review what happened.

The police report stated security pushed Roper down after forcing him out of the bar.
