CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -- Medical examiners have identified and elderly man killed in an overnight house fire.

Chattanooga fire officials say the fire broke out around 11 p.m. at a residence in the 3200 block of Van Buren Street.

A couple living there says they heard popping sounds coming from the back of the house.

The husband tried to use a portable fire extinguisher to put out the flames but the high winds helped spread the fire into the kitchen area.

When firefighters arrived, they reported huge flames at the back of the house.

The woman tried to get her 95-year-old father, Z.M. Tussey, out, but was unsuccessful. His body was found inside the house. Medical examiners say he died of smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
