Lady Mocs off to Big Dance, Mocs search for new coach

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -- The Lady Mocs are off to the big dance and the Chattanooga men are searching for a new head coach.

"We have looked forward to it all season. We knew it was coming. They have worked so hard, we're excited and we're packed to stay until Tuesday morning," said life-long Lady Mocs fan, Jane Heavener.

Heavener has never been to Texas, but as she said, she'll follow the ladies anywhere.

Fans going and staying sent the Lady Mocs off in style Thursday at Tac Air South. Next stop: a date with Nebraska in the opening round of the NCAA Women's Tournament.

The Lady Mocs are making their 14th trip to the big dance and second in four seasons.

Back home in Chattanooga, things are different for the UTC men as they deal with the reality of three straight losing seasons.

John Shulman and UTC have parted ways. He leaves the second most winning coach in school history, but with a losing record.

Shulman said, "You can remember the two NCAA Tournaments or the four regular season titles or beating Tennessee, but please remember me as a coach who cared and loves people."

To quote Mark Wiedmer with our partner at the Times Free Press, "Shulman was Mocs hoops at its best and worst."

And since "its best" not only have season ticket sales dropped nearly a third, but average attendance has also been on a downward slope.

The UTC brass will start a nationwide search, but in the meantime all focus will be with the Lady Mocs.

"Go Lady Mocs," added Heavener before boarding the plane to Texas.

The violence must stop. The killings must stop.  That's been the message for about a month now.  The VRI, aimed at making Chattanooga's streets safer, is also designed to keep the offenders safe, too.More
