Hospital stays in Tennessee among most costly in the nation

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -- Tennessee is now one of the top most expensive places to stay in a hospital.

The state ranks at number 3 in the nation.

The data, reported by the Tennessean, is from researchers at "America's Health Insurance Plans," which uses prices from 2008 through 2010.

The average annual inpatient hospital cost rose 8.8% for Tennessee patients who were covered by commercial policies.

New York has the highest rate of hospital cost hikes at 10.5%, followed by Texas at 9.3%.

Several issues come to light from the report:

  • Hospital prices vary greatly among metro areas in a given state
  • Consolidation of hospitals contributes to the pricing increase
  • Prices overall rose sharply in the study period of 2008-2010
