TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Alabama athletic director Mal Moore is stepping down to become special assistant to the president.
The university announced the move on Wednesday, which Moore said is "due to factors related to my health." The 73-year-old Moore has been hospitalized at Duke University Medical Center for pulmonary problems.
He has been the Crimson Tide's athletic director since 1999 after playing and coaching under Paul "Bear" Bryant. The football and athletic administration building is named after him.
Moore has been part of 10 national championship football teams as a player, coach or administrator. He hired coach Nick Saban, who has led the Tide to three of the last four national titles.
