PIGEON FORGE (News Sentinel) -- Their mama having fled to save her own life, all the seven puppies could do was squeal from under the front porch floorboards.

But their noisiness probably saved the pups' lives Monday as Pigeon Forge public works employees, hearing their cries, pried up the floorboards from a mountain cabin damaged by a wildfire and rescued them.

The puppies were discovered as Sevier County Fire Marshal Jay Breeden led members of the print media on a tour of fire destruction Monday. Bringing them down from the mountain, he turned them over to Phillip King, a Sevier County animal control officer, who said he would take them to the Sevier County Humane Society for a veterinary checkup and, ultimately, adoption.
