CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) -- A Brainerd business was hit with bullets, when two men chased another man into the parking lot, shooting him, and leaving him for dead.
Jamie Lyle was shopping off Brainerd Road, when she heard what she thought were fireworks.
"I was standing right there at the yard sale, and I thought I heard firecrackers," Lyle says. "I turned around and there were these two guys shooting at another dude running, and I just took off in the house."
Lyle took cover behind a stranger's couch. She says she was worried she might be next.
"I hope they don't shoot us, because we were right there staring at them," says Lyle.
Eyewitnesses tell police the argument that led to the shooting started across the street.
"It appears that the altercation started at the Walgreens parking lot, and the victim was running toward the Rite Aid, and that's when the suspect shot at him multiple times," says Officer Nathan Hartwig.
The Rite Aid was hit with bullets that missed the victim, but Officer Hartwig says no one inside was injured.
The victim collapsed.
"We found the victim at Rite Aid, and he was taken to Erlanger by ambulance," says Hartwig.
When police arrived, the suspects were gone.
"But we have some leads on them, and we are searching for them right now," says Hartwig.
The crime scene unit spent the evening collecting evidence.
A silver Chevrolet Malibu was involved, but police aren't sure how.
They say the 30-year-old victim was targeted.
Police are working to find out why.
"Right now it's too early to tell what the shooting was actually about," says Hartwig.
No matter the motive, Jamie Lyle worries about her safety.
"I moved down here to get away from the crime," Lyle says. "I lived in Maryland. That's the second shooting I've seen since I've been here. It's a little unsettling."
It hasn't been long since police were on this stretch of Brainerd Road.
Just Wednesday, a SWAT team swarmed a home on Booth Road, half a mile from where Thursday's shooting happened.
There they arrested Celvin Houston, the man accused of shooting a Chattanooga police officer earlier this week.
