SIGNAL MOUNTAIN, TN (WRCB) -- Two hikers tell Channel 3 they saw Harvey Cagle, 50, of Signal Mountain on the trail just a couple hours before his death.
"The trails were really muddy. It was really wet," says Sarah Weichselbaum who often visits the hiking trails on Signal Mountain.
"The scenery, the mountains, it's absolutely gorgeous and the waterfalls. I just can't get enough of it. I love the outdoors," Weichselbaum says.
She was with her friend, Bo Owens, Wednesday afternoon. They had hiked down from Edwards Point when they passed two hikers on their way up the trail but felt something was off.
"His words were slurred. He couldn't understand what we were saying and we couldn't understand what he was saying but he was walking with a friend so I didn't think anything of it," says Weichselbaum.
Channel 3 showed her a photo of Cagle taken from a previous legal matter. She confirms Cagle is the man they saw on the trail.
"He said a couple things, that he had lived in the mountain area for some time, basically his whole life," Weichselbaum explains.
They were shocked to learn he fell from Rainbow Falls and died as rescuers were bringing him up the mountain.
"Just a chill, a creepy chill went down my back," Owens says.
"I got that gut feeling like oh my God we just saw that person like an hour ago," Weichselbaum says.
Now she says she'll be more careful when hiking on wet mountain trails. "There are very high cliffs that you can easily fall off of if you weren't being careful enough," Weichselbaum says.
Authorities tell Channel 3 the investigation is ongoing and they are awaiting information from the Hamilton County Medical Examiner's Office.
Law enforcement were out on the roadways making sure it was a safe Labor Day holiday for everyone.
