Sleep and Exercise

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) - It is something that hardly any of us get enough of.

Dr. Anuj Chandra, Advanced Center For Sleep Disorders says ""We know that as a society we are all sleep deprived, including children, there is a lot of data on that."

And believe it or not, one hour can make a big difference.

Dr. Chandra says "You're in a state of jet lag, one hour is important, our bodies can not adjust overnight."

Dr. Chandra, from the Advanced Center For Sleep Disorders says if you're still trying to adjust to daylight saving time, you're not alone. But if you want to get a good night's rest, you might want to hit the gym more. A new national poll shows there is a strong link between exercise and sleep.

Dr. Chandra says "The two most remarkable things that came out of this is the more you exercise, you sleep a lot better."

The poll also showed that those who don't exercise are about twice as likely to be at risk for sleep apnea and three times as likely to have trouble staying awake while driving.

Dr. Chandra says when it comes to healthy sleep make exercise a part of your day. Vigorous exercise is better, but even moderate exercise can make a difference. He also says it is important to keep a regular sleep schedule and watch for signs of a possible sleep problem.

Dr. Chandra says "Are you snoring, are you having a lot of body jerking, are you having gasping spells?

If so, you should see a doctor. Sleep problems have been linked to stroke, heart disease, and high blood pressure.

So exercise and sleep well.
