CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -- Thursday morning, Chattanooga City Council District 9 candidate Peter Murphy tweeted "The election commission just ruled that I lost an election by 1/2 of a vote. Who says your vote doesn't count?"
His words confirmed how close the results in some elections can run.
Wednesday morning, the Hamilton County Election Commission granted the election win to Yusuf Hakeem.
Hakeem is now the official winner of the Chattanooga City Council District 9 seat.
The results in the March 5 election ended with a six-vote difference between Hakeem and Murphy, which prompted the Election Commission to examine the validity of the ballots where write-in candidates were named.
The city charter says the winner will be the candidate with 50% of the vote, plus one vote.
Charlotte Mullis-Morgan, Administrator of Elections, told Channel 3 that from the seven write-in ballots, five were counted, and two were thrown out.
