CHEROKEE COUNTY, NC (WRCB) -- A North Carolina State Trooper is on administrative duty following a shooting in Cherokee County Monday morning.

Officials say Trooper H.S. Robertson responded to a call on US 64 in Cherokee County.

Robertson says when he got there, he tried to speak with the suspect, Dustin L. Carter, who then charged at him in an aggressive manner. A fight ensued which resulted in Robertson shooting Carter

Carter was taken into custody and transported to Erlanger Medical Center. His condition is unknown.

Robertson was placed on administrative duty pending an investigation which is standard operating procedure in Trooper involved shootings.

"This type incident is a reminder of the serious and dangerous situations our troopers face every single day," Department of Public Safety Secretary Kieran Shanahan says "We are grateful that Trooper Robertson sustained only minor injuries."

Warrants were issued for Carter for assault on a law enforcement officer.
