Sonny Neal's siblings speak out

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB)  --  It's been nearly one year since Sonny Neal's adopted 9-year-old daughter, Maddie, discovered her grandfather's body in the kitchen.

Her mother was later found stabbed to death in the pool house. Now, Neal's family is opening up about the events leading up to the gruesome discovery.

"We do love our brother and he is a good man. If not I wouldn't stand behind him," says sister Katherine Van Kleeck.

Kleeck and brother Johnny Neal are opening up about that tragic day at the request of their brother, Neal.

Neal is serving a life sentence after he pleaded guilty to murdering his wife Jessica and her grandfather, Don Shedd.

"Now he feels its time to get part of his story out and told," Kleeck says. She says her brother was depressed for a number of reasons. "He was depressed over the fact that his wife was having an affair and taunting him with it," says Kleeck.

She also says their other brother passed away from terminal cancer earlier that month. However, the tip of the iceburg came when Neal saw Jessica's grandfather, Shedd, molesting his daughter Maddie.

Earlier that day Kleeck says Neal came home from a friends house and saw Shedd and Maddie together on a golf cart. Maddie was on Shedd's lap.

They say he later found out Shedd also abused Jessica and her sister.

"If I would've been in his shoes and found out what he did. I would've done the same," brother Neal says.

Neal's family says he pleaded guilty to two counts of murder to keep Maddie from testifying. He's currently serving a life sentence with no parole.
