CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -- Chattanooga Police say a 16-year-old has been shot and killed near 2620 Carr Street in Chattanooga.

Hamilton County Department of Education Superintendent Rick Smith says Lamonte Williams got off the bus for school but did not go to class. He left the campus and was shot on Carr Street.

Williams was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Chattanooga Police Department.

Police located 18-year-old Courtney Birt as a possible suspect; Birt is now in custody and charged with criminal homicide.

As events unfolded, Birt was seen fleeing the scene, headed towards the Howard School. This prompted police to lock down the school as a safety precaution for students and faculty.

Brainerd High School also went into a soft, controlled access lockdown.

A Howard principal on the scene said the student "should have been in school."

Some parents came to the school to retrieve their children.

Howard High School will resume class as normal Wednesday. An assembly will be held to address the situation.

Birt was shot in the leg in 2012.
