Dozens of guns stolen in north Georgia

Posted: Updated:

CHATTOOGA COUNTY, GA. (WRCB) -- In a week's time nearly five dozen guns have been stolen from homes in Walker and Chattooga counties.

Sheriff Mark Schrader says two homes on Ridgeway Drive in Trion were hit the same day.

The thieves shot through the front door of a home and made a clean getaway with the homeowner's gun collection.

Schrader says, "One lost about 20 firearms. The other lost about two. The next day we had a similar break-in."

More than $40,000 worth of guns and ammo were stolen from the two homes.

Homes nearby in Walker County are also dealing with the same problem.

More than a dozen guns are missing after break-ins.

Both agencies are working to find out who is rustling up all the weapons.

"We have tried to canvas the neighborhood and look for suspicious vehicles. We have compared notes with Walker County," Schrader says.

Channel 3 went to talk to the homeowners, but no one was home.

So far six have been broken into and the sheriff says the sneaky thieves hit all the homes before lunchtime.

Shrader has called in the GBI to help.

His concern is the missing guns will end up back on the streets in the hands of bad guys.

"I talked to the crime lab and they are prioritizing our case, just for the fact so many guns have been taken," says Schrader.
