CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -- Read Across Chattanooga wrapped up their week-long campaign Saturday with a big party, and there couldn't have been a better day to celebrate.
In honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday, over 1,000 area children came out to the Hamilton Place Mall to pick up a book and read.
The United Way kicked off the party with a visit from the Cat in the Hat himself. Everyone was able to make their own striped top hats as well.
The event also included guest readers and everyone sharing their favorite childhood Suess memories.
Organizers say Dr. Seuss' birthday is the perfect focus to get their message across.
Everybody learns to read through Dr. Seuss, so this is a great way to promote reading. It's the most important thing you can do for your child between birth to three years," says Wayne Collins.
Organizers also handed out free books to as many children as possible, but the event was such a success they ran out.
