While growing up children are often told to eat their vegetables or they won’t grow up to be big and healthy. This becomes more and more true everyday as American society slides deeper and deeper into a fast food nation. The problem with being a fast food nation, besides from the obvious epidemic of obesity, is that those who gorge themselves on fast food are missing out on some of the most important nutrients. The nutrients of these super foods will not be found at a drive through.
1. The first super food is one that is often times over looked. Apricots are rich in beta-carotene. Beta-carotenes help to prevent free-radical damage and protect the eyes. The body also turns beta-carotene into vitamin A, which is an essential vitamin. Apricots are best snacked on dried or when they are firm and fresh. Once an apricot starts to become soft it loses nutrients.
2. The second super food is avocados. Avocados have healthy fats called Oleic acid which will help to reduce cholesterol. Avocados, just like any other fruit, are best eaten when fresh before they lose their nutrients.
3. The third super food is raspberries. Raspberries are packed full of vitamin C, and they are high in fiber. Vitamin C is an amazing nutrient; it makes fat cells less effective by breaking down the cells. Raspberries are great when put into protein shakes or on top of organic oatmeal.
4. The fourth and final super food is cantaloupe. One half of a cantaloupe contains almost double the recommended daily dosage of vitamin C. Cantaloupes also are packed full of beta-carotene. These two powerful antioxidants are a great combination to protect cells.
