Alexander faults Obama for automatic budget cuts

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Sen. Lamar Alexander, a Republican from Tennessee, said President Barack Obama has failed to provide a plan to avoid the automatic budget cuts scheduled to take effect Friday.

Alexander told reporters Thursday during a conference call that if the cuts known in Washington as sequestration go into effect, it would be "a complete failure of the presidential leadership." He said the president should have given the Senate a federal budget instead of spending the last 18 months using "scare tactics" to frighten the country about the effects of the $85 billion in broad-based federal spending reductions.

The Senate on Thursday killed a Democratic plan to replace the spending cuts this year with a new minimum tax on the wealthy and cuts to defense and farm subsidies.
