A "favor" costs Ringgold officer his job

Posted: Updated:

RINGGOLD, GA (WRCB) -- In the 250-page document obtained by Channel 3, Ringgold Police Sgt. Tom Evans lost his job for doing a friend a "favor."

The report states, in October 2012, Angela and Katherine Russell and FBI Agent Ken Hillman, were having drinks at Acoustic Café in Ringgold, when they tried to leave in their own vehicles.

A bartender used better judgement. She called police.

On the call to dispatch, the woman says, "We have a lady leaving the Acoustic Cafe who is drunk. We asked if someone could take her home, and she just went and got in the car."

Soon after, the woman's mother pulled her car next to her daughter's.

It was after 11 o' clock that night when Sgt. Tom Evans was dispatched to the restaurant.

The investigation states, "The group appeared too drunk to drive."

Agent Hillman drove his truck to the front of the building after he had been drinking.

The report states Evans recognized the agent.

Dispatch: "So you have another subject that is drunk, that is entering a black Tahoe. Is that what I understand?"

Bartender: "Yes. He was trying to leave."

The investigation by the chief of police, says instead of arresting anyone for DUI or filing a report, Sgt. Evans crossed state lines to drive the trio to a condo in Chattanooga.

Department policy says don't leave your post.

It goes on to state, Sgt. Evans did not inform Catoosa 9-1-1 where he was going.

This left just one officer on duty in the city at that time.

The investigation says after leaving the condo in Chattanooga, Sgt. Evans drove the younger woman back to Ringgold and asked her to "remove her shirt."

Evans told the chief he was trying to do the agent a favor, which ultimately cost him his job with the force.

The investigation shows Evans violated at least seven different policies.

Channel 3 had a chance to speak with the manager of Acoustic Café.

He says his employee made the right call.

We are told the FBI agent in question has a complaint filed against him as well.
