CHATTANOOGA (WRCB/UTC) -- Chattanooga softball kicked off the home portion of its 2013 schedule with two wins on day one of the annual Frost Classic Friday afternoon at Frost Stadium.
The Lady Mocs (6-5) opened with a 4-3 win over Eastern Kentucky before capping the day with a 1-0 victory over Lipscomb.
Chattanooga scored three runs in the fourth to erase an early one-run deficit against EKU. Sarah Beth Roberts tied the game with a sacrifice fly, and senior Kasey Tydincgo delivered a two-run double to give UTC a 3-1 lead.
The Colonels managed to tie the game at 3 in the sixth, but Alyssa Taylor's single scored Stephanie Rieck with the eventual winning run in the bottom half of the inning.
Taylor Deason tossed a complete game six-hitter to pick up the win. She struck out six and walked just one in her fourth win of the season.
The only run of Chattanooga's nightcap with Lipscomb came when Rieck was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Lady Mocs mustered just three hits in the game.
Deason (5-3) teamed with freshman Kaisey Carson on the four-hit shutout in the circle. Carson gave up three hits and a walk through the first four innings, while Deason followed with three scoreless innings of relief to earn the victory.
Chattanooga will play two more games Saturday in the 12-team tournament. UTC opens against Miami (Ohio) at 1:15 p.m. ET and follows with a 3:30 p.m. ET battle with Boston College. Both games will be played at Frost Stadium.
