Posted: Updated:

Grace Academy (boys) 71, Whitwell 49
Austin Powell scored 23 points to lead Grace Academy to a 71-49 win over visiting Whitwell in the quarterfinals of the Region 3-A boys basketball tournament Friday night.

The Golden Eagles (11-14) advance to next Tuesday's semifinals, where they'll face either Marion County or Silverdale Academy. The other three 3-A quarterfinals will be played Saturday night.

Powell scored nine straight points in the first quarter to help Grace open an early 10-point lead. The Tigers endured a scoring drought of nearly six minutes across the end of the first and beginning of the second periods, and wound up trailing 37-19 at the break.

Justin Harris scored 16 of his team-high 19 points in the second half for Whitwell, but the Golden Eagles' lead only grew.

Josh Smith added 14 points and Blake Savard finished with 12 points in the win for Grace, while Chase White chipped in 10 points for Whitwell.

York Institute (girls) 56, Notre Dame 41
Notre Dame rallied back from a slow start in the first half, but couldn't do the same in the second in a 56-41 home loss to York Institute in the quarterfinals of the Region 4-AA girls tournament.

All four local schools in the tournament from District 7-AA (Notre Dame, Grundy County, Bledsoe County and CCS) saw their seasons end in Friday's quarterfinal round.

Ashley Wright led all scorers with 16 points, and hit a 3-pointer midway through the second quarter to give York an 18-7 lead. The Irish, who scored just seven points in the game's first 12 minutes, responded with a 10-0 run in the final four minutes of the first half to pull within 18-17 at the break, but couldn't keep pace in the second half.

Morgan Cantrell led Notre Dame with 11 points.

Silverdale Academy (girls) 75, Richard Hardy Memorial 61
Mariah Massengill poured in 34 points to help top-seeded Silverdale Academy avoid an upset with a 75-61 win over Richard Hardy Memorial in the quarterfinals of the Region 3-A tournament.

Silverdale advances to face Sale Creek in next Monday's semifinals at Sale Creek. Monday's winner will not only earn a chance to play for a region championship, but it will also secure a spot in next weekend's sub-state sectional round.

The Seahawks took a 39-27 lead at the half, and seemed poised to pull away in the third quarter. Silverdale outscored Hardy Memorial by five in the third quarter to push the lead to 17, but the Eagles mounted one last rally in the final period.

Kyla Braden and Courtney Ingram opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back 3-pointers, sparking a 12-0 run that pulled Hardy Memorial within 58-53 with five minutes to play.

Massengill helped Silverdale regroup, slicing through the defense for a layup to snap the scoreless drought and spark a 12-2 run for the Seahawks that put the game away.

Massengill led three Silverdale players in double figures while adding eight assists. Sloane Woodard finished with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Megan Lewis added 17 points.

Carley Layne led Hardy Memorial with 18 points, while Braden finished with 17 in the Eagles' season-finale.

Meigs County (girls) 75, Howard 47
Emileigh Swafford scored 32 points to lead Meigs County to an easy 75-47 rout of host Howard in the quarterfinals of the Region 3-AA girls tournament.

The Lady Tigers advance to face top-seeded McMinn Central in Monday's semifinals at McMinn County High School. The Chargerettes blasted Brainerd 76-32 on Friday.

After Howard jumped out to an early lead, Swafford connected on four of her six 3-pointers during an 18-0 run that put Meigs County ahead to stay. The Lady Tigers held Howard scoreless for more than six minutes in the first half en route to a 46-21 lead at the break.

Taylor Boggess added 15 points in the win for Meigs County, while Angel Davis finished with 10.

Deronaerha Smartt led the Hustlin' Tigers with 19 points. Nequilla Robinson also finished in double figures with 14.
