UPDATE: child killed in Meigs County accident

Posted: Updated:

MEIGS COUNTY, TN (WRCB)  --  A sign that reads "SLOW, DEATH IN FAMILY" sits at both ends of River Road in Meigs County.

The mood in the community is somber after Allie Blevins, 6, was hit and killed by a car while trying to cross the road.

"It just broke our heart," says Susie Ward.

Allie and her 10-year-old brother were at their grandmother's house. They were trying to cross the road to get home, directly across the street, when Allie was hit by a passing car.

The driver of the car, Steven McCosh, 39, of Decatur, is not facing any charges.

Friends tell Channel 3 Allie was a cheerleader at her school and was looking forward cheering on the Tigers when football season starts.

"I know she's going to really be missed," Ward says.

"They are very good kids around the community, enjoyed seeing them, very good kids in school," Chris Erwin says.

Ward says she can't imagine the pain the children's parents are going through, especially Allie's brother who watched as the tragedy unfolded right in front of him.

"Really pray for the little boy," says Ward.

Prayers may be all this community can do to begin to move forward, for themselves and the Blevins family.

"God will just come down and be with them," says Ward.

"If you need anything, we're here for you," Erwin says.
