Central, Brainerd keep their seasons alive with wins

Posted: Updated:

Brainerd 63, East Ridge 54
Eddie Hitchcock did everything he could to keep East Ridge's season alive.

It still wasn't enough.

The standout guard poured in 35 points, but the Pioneers' season still came to an end with a 63-54 loss at Brainerd Friday night in the quarterfinals of the District 6-AA Tournament.

The Panthers, who clinch a spot in next week's regional tournament, advance to face second-seeded Tyner in Saturday's semifinals at Hixson High. Howard and Central will face off in the other semifinal.

The Panthers have now advanced to regional play in all 37 seasons under head coach Robert High.

Hitchcock hit seven 3-pointers in the game, and scored 19 of his points in the second half to help East Ridge erase an eight-point third quarter deficit.

The Pioneers pulled even midway through the fourth quarter, but could never take the lead. Every time Hitchcock hit a big shot, Brainerd's Jay Besley answered at the other end.

Besley countered Hitchcock's big night with 25 points of his own, including five buckets from behind the 3-point arc. His final 3-pointer sparked the Panthers' 8-0 closing run that put the game away.

Marques Tipton added 14 points in the win for Brainerd.

Central 57, East Hamilton 42
An ugly start to its District 6-AA quarterfinal Friday night led to a disappointing early finish to the season in a 57-42 home loss to Chattanooga Central.

The Pounders jumped out to a quick nine-point first quarter lead and never looked back in clinching a spot in next week's regional tournament. They also advance to face top-seeded Howard in Saturday's 6-AA semifinals at Hixson High.

David Holley scored 12 of his game-high 18 points in the second half to help Central build on a 27-18 halftime advantage. The Pounders never trailed in the game.

East Hamilton went 0-for-12 beyond the 3-point arc while digging themselves a first-half hole, but managed to pull within five late in the third quarter. However, Central closed the period on an 8-0 run to push the advantage back to double digits and was never threatened again.

Robert Cobb and Colton Morgan added 11 points apiece for Central in the win.

Cody Knox led the Hurricanes with 13 points. Dominic Powell added 10, all in the second half.

Grace Academy (girls) 53, CSAS 50
Sierra Nunley's three-point play with 17.2 seconds left lifted Grace Academy to a 53-50 win over Chattanooga Arts & Sciences in the semifinals of the District 5-A tournament at Chattanooga State.

The Golden Eagles led the entire first half, but trailed for most of the second until Nunley's bucket gave them a 51-50 lead in the final minute. Erika Goodman hit two free throws to provide the final margin of victory.

Jessica Bonner and Compton scored 12 points apiece for Grace, who clinches a home game in next week's regional tournament and advances to face top-seeded Silverdale Academy for the 5-A tournament championship.

Keturah Billen, Samantha Maffett and Arica Montgomery each scored 12 points for CSAS.
