Cleveland builds big early lead at traditional wrestling tourney

Posted: Updated:

FRANKLIN, Tenn. (WRCB) -- Two weeks after a dominating run to the TSSAA state duals championship, Cleveland is in position for a repeat performance following day one of the Tennessee state traditional wrestling tournament.

The Blue Raiders, who qualified a wrestler in each of the 14 weight classes, advance eight grapplers through Thursday night's first two rounds and into Friday morning's championship quarterfinals.

That effort was enough for 88.5 team points and a 32.5-point lead over second-place Beech entering day two of the three-day event at the Williamson County Agricultural Expo Center.

Ravenwood (52.0), Wilson Central (50.5) and Soddy-Daisy (47.0) round out the top five. Walker Valley is sixth (44.0), and Chattanooga Central and Bradley Central are also in the top 15 of the Division I team standings.

Cleveland's Chris Debien (112), Austin Stevison (120), Austin Oliver (126) and Aaron Lopez (160), all defending state champs, joined teammates Hayden Hamilton (132), Josh Hamilton (152), Ethan West (182), Koran Kennedy (285) in winning two matches Thursday.

The Blue Raiders' other six wrestlers are all still alive in the consolation brackets, giving Cleveland more chances to score points than any other team.

Soddy-Daisy advanced six wrestlers to the championship quarterfinals, while Bradley Central, Walker Valley, Chattanooga Central and Notre Dame each boast a trio of quarterfinalists.

East Ridge has two in the quarters, while Howard and Ooltewah each have one.

Wrestling resumes at 10 a.m. CT Friday morning when the Division II bracket also joins the fray.
