Grundy County 72, Notre Dame 68
CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) -- Notre Dame beat Grundy County twice during the regular season by a combined 69 points, but the Irish beat the Yellow Jackets when it mattered most.
Three Grundy County players combined for 51 points in a 72-68 upset of host Notre Dame in the opening round of the District 7-AA tournament Tuesday night, bringing and abrupt and early finish to the Irish's season.
Levi Miller, Trevor Hampton and Jacob Campbell scored 17 points apiece to fuel the win for the Jackets, who won just one district game all season. Now they'll travel to second-seeded Signal Mountain for Thursday's semifinals.
Campbell hit five 3-pointers and helped Grundy (8-16) push the advantage to as many as eleven points twice in the second half.
Stedmon Ford led all scorers with 25 points, but couldn't get Notre Dame any closer than three down the stretch.
Early it looked like another Irish rout, as the Yellow Jackets fell behind 7-0 in the opening minutes. However, Miller hit a 3-pointer to get Grundy on the board and spark an 11-2 run that moved the Jackets in front.
They never trailed again.
Trevor Rheal also finished in double figures for Grundy County with 12 points, while point guard Austyn Cooper turned in a superb effort with nine points, eight rebounds and 12 assists.
Kareem Orr added 19 points and Kealy Green chipped in 13 for Notre Dame (17-10).
