CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -- A Sunday morning fire at the Boynton Terrace Apartments has been ruled accidental.

Chattanooga Fire Department Captain Anthony Moore, with the Fire Investigation Division said the fire was most likely caused by food being left unattended on the stove.

When firefighters arrived Sunday, firefighters rushed to the seventh floor, where they heard a "popping noise" in one of the units.

Inside, they found the apartment resident, Wayne Emilien, in bed.

Captain Don Bowman said the man was either unconscious, or in a deep sleep, possibly from breathing toxic smoke. The firefighters removed the victim from the apartment and administered oxygen to him.

The victim was transported to Erlanger Medical Center, where he was treated and released for smoke inhalation.
