Soddy-Daisy, Cleveland stay alive at TSSAA state duals

FRANKLIN, Tenn. (WRCB) -- Cleveland and Soddy-Daisy remained on course for a state championship rematch, though the latter had a tougher time navigated day one of the TSSAA State Duals at the Williamson County Agricultural Expo Center.

The Trojans started the day by sending three starters home for a violation of team rules, then ended it by beating Science Hill and Maryville to advance to Saturday's Class AAA semifinals against Wilson Central.

Our media partners at the Chattanooga Times Free Press reported Friday morning that Turbo Smith (152 pounds), Brandon Hunt (160) and Cody Grant (285) were all removed from the lineup by head coach Jim Higgins. Without the trio, Soddy-Daisy had no trouble with Science Hill in a 51-16 rout, but narrowly escaped Maryville 31-30.

Cleveland, meanwhile, encountered little adversity en route to the final four. The Blue Raiders, who finished runner-up to the Trojans a year ago, flattened Cordova (73-0) and Clarksville (61-12) by a combined 133-12.

Top-ranked Cleveland will face Heritage in the semifinals Saturday afternoon, with the winner facing either Soddy-Daisy or Wilson Central in the evening final.

The Chattanooga area's other four duals participants dropped into the consolation brackets Friday night.

In Class A/AA, East Ridge won its opener over Sycamore (50-27) before falling to Greeneville (44-36) in the semifinals. Greeneville had earlier defeated Hixson (39-31) in the opening round.

The Wildcats will face Sycamore in an elimination dual Saturday morning with the winner set to meet Stone Memorial in the loser's bracket semis. East Ridge is already in the consolation semifinals, where it awaits either Martin Luther King or Eagleville.

McCallie beat St. Benedict (41-21) to open the Division II bracket, but fell into the consolation bracket with a 33-17 loss to Father Ryan in the state semifinals. The Blue Tornado will wrestle MBA in the morning for a spot in the third-place dual.

Baylor had a bye through the first round before coming up short against title-favorite Christian Brothers, 39-24. The Red Raiders will wrestle either Brentwood Academy or St. Benedict Saturday afternoon for a spot in the third place match.
