Baylor nips GPS; Cleveland and Soddy-Daisy head to duals

Kaleigh Clemons hit a jumper with 5.3 seconds left to lift Baylor to a 46-45 rivalry win over visiting Girls Preparatory School Thursday night.

Clemons nearly recorded a triple-double, finishing with 15 points, nine assists and eight rebounds. Abby Hubert led the Lady Raiders with 16 points.

The Bruisers used a late second quarter surge to take a 24-21 lead at the half, but Baylor opened the third period with a 10-1 run to take the lead.

Sydney Shutters capped the GPS rally with a go-ahead basket with 17 seconds to play, but Clemons hit the game winner 13 seconds later to snap the Bruisers' five-game win streak in the rivalry series.

Chappel Sharrock led GPS with 12 points, while Brianna Farris and Shutters each added 11.

The game was the first of three straight athletic battles between the two local Division II powers. Baylor is slated to host McCallie on the hardwood Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET, then the two will meet on the wrestling mat Monday at 6 p.m. ET.

The wrestling dual was originally scheduled for Friday night, but was postponed because of the threat of inclement weather.

Cleveland, Soddy-Daisy wrestlers lock up state duals spots
Soddy-Daisy and Cleveland passed on a showdown in the Region 3 duals finals, but they may get their chance to square off next week after both clinched their spots for the state duals in Franklin.

Cleveland beat rival Bradley Central 43-26 in the Region 3 semifinals to clinch a state duals ticket, while Soddy-Daisy topped Walker Valley 33-24. The two semifinal winners are scheduled to wrestle to determine a region champ, but both sides declined for a third straight year.

The Trojans wrestled without star Gage Richmond, who is battling the flu. Soddy-Daisy shuffled its upper weight classes to erase an early deficit, then used back-to-back pins from Austin Houser (113) and Jacob Stevens (120) to secure the win.

Cleveland's win over Bradley Central wasn't as close as the final score. The Blue Raiders raced out to a big early lead before cruising to victory over the overmatched Bears, who fielded a lineup void of five injured starters.
