Lady Mocs hold off Samford for another SoCon road win

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WRCB) -- Ashlen Dewart scored 14 points to help the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's basketball team hold off host Samford 66-60 Wednesday  night at the Pete Hanna Center.

The Lady Mocs (15-3, 8-1 in SoCon) finish unbeaten on a week-long, three-game road trip heading into a key conference showdown with Appalachian State this Saturday at McKenzie Arena.

Taylor Hall and Kayla Christopher added 12 apiece to help UTC take sole possession of first place in the SoCon. Elon (10-7, 7-1) was idle Wednesday night and now sits a half-game behind Chattanooga.

The Lady Mocs opened the game on a 15-0 run before hitting a cold stretch in the middle of the first half. Chattanooga then surged again before the break to take a 30-19 halftime lead.

Samford rallied to cut the deficit down to two on several occasions, but could never tie the game or take the lead. Jazmine Martin erupted for a career-high 31 points, and her jumper with 1:10 left got the Bulldogs within 62-60.

Dewart scored on a layup at the other end for a four-point lead and UTC hit two of four free throws in the final 28 seconds while Samford turned it over twice.

The Lady Mocs played without Kylie Lambert, who has been battling shin problems. Head coach Wes Moore said on his postgame show Lambert will likely be ready for Saturday's game with the Mountaineers, which tips off at 6 p.m. ET.
