Researchers say supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids, such as found in Omega XL, could help improve bedsore healing by up to 25% in critically ill, bedridden patients.
Fort Lauderdale, FL (PRWEB) January 21, 2013
Bedsores are a common result of constant pressure on the skin and underlying tissue due to prolonged sitting or lying down. Bedsores, or pressure ulcers, are caused by a lack of oxygen, reduced blood flow, and skin wetness. They are a common problem in critically ill, bedridden patients, causing pain and the possibility of infection. Inspired by previous studies suggesting supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids, such as found in Omega XL, raised oxygen levels in body tissues on critically ill patients, researchers from Tel Aviv University sought to determine whether supplementation with omega-3s could also help heal bedsores.
The randomized study, published in the American Journal of Critical Care, assessed the impact of omega-3 supplementation in 40 critically ill bedridden patients. Half of the patients were given standard hospital diets and the other half were given a daily omega-3 supplement in addition to their food.
After three weeks, the researchers found not only a 20 to 25% improvement according to the Pressure Ulcer Scale for Healing, but also a significant lessening of pain and discomfort from bedsores, and a more efficient immune system associated with a reduction of inflammation throughout the body.In addition, researchers noted a significant decrease in the amount of Creactive protein in the blood, which is associated with inflammation and linked to viral and bacterial infections, rheumatic diseases, tissue injury, and necrosis – common complications associated with bedsores. The researchers concluded that critically ill bedridden patients experienced decreased progression of bedsores when given omega-3 supplements daily, and a decrease in blood concentrations of C-reactive protein,m which lowered incidence of infection and other complications.
