Meet Mobley, Chattanooga's New Year Baby

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WRCB-DT) - As the new father was handed his son for the first time, he grinned an remarked, "No pressure!" Matthew and Maria Dutton were not only new, first-time parents. On this day, January 1, 2013, little Mobley's 12:33 AM birth at Erlanger Medical Center was Chattanooga's first of the New Year.

Matthew, Artistic Director at Rock City, said the couple's cats back home in Hixson were warned Mobley was on his way, though the timing was a bit of a surprise. "We were getting closer to the time," he said, "and I kind of kicked the idea around...'well, maybe he's gonna be here before New Year's or after New Year's.' I was just like, 'hey, as long as he gets here, it doesn't matter one way or the other.'"

And so, very early Tuesday morning, four days past his due date, Mobley decided it was time to make his grand entrance. "It just got later and later," said Matthew, "closer to the time, and then, like, 'wow, it's midnight. Happy new year! He's ready? What?'"

Coming in at 8 pounds, 7 ounces, and 21 inches long, the little man was given the name Mobley Alexander Dutton; Mobley from his father's side of the family, Alexander for his mother's grandfather. Maria is still recovering. "I couldn't have done it," said Matthew.

"He gets his good looks from his mom," said the new dad. As he rocked his sleeping son, he for the first time took stock of what a January 1st birthday means. "Every New Year's," he predicted, "he's gonna have a celebration with fireworks all over the world for him, I figured. You know, when he gets older, he's gonna be able to really party down because everyone else is partying already."

(WRCB) - Good Thursday. Hold on. The heat and humidity are going to continue through the weekend.Today, look for a high of 95 and a heat index near 100. We won't see the same coverage of storms that we saw last night, but with this much heat and humidity in place you never want to completely rule out one or two storms breaking through.More
