Neighbors react to Friday night gunfire near Tyner Academy

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -- Gunshots rang out near a local high school at the same time students crowded a basketball game for the second weekend in a row.

Shots were fired outside Tyner High School Friday night around 10 p.m. while the Tyner-Howard basketball game was being played inside.  Last Friday several shots were fired near Brainerd High School at the same time its basketball game with Howard was going on.

Now with this latest scene at Tyner, many are on edge wondering -- what's next?

"I heard bang bang, bang bang," neighbor Roy Parrott said. The sound of four consecutive gunshots made him jump to his feet.

"I figured it was probably a fight and somebody got shot," Parrott said.

He didn't see anybody who looked suspicious from his upstairs window but thought the gunfire came from either the Tyner high school parking lot or along Ty Hi Drive.  "I guessed it was there as soon as I heard it. Where else would it be? This is a very quiet neighborhood," Parrott said.

A few minutes later, police swarmed and he says people immediately got in their cars, leaving the game. He saw officers question several people in front of his house, but Chattanooga Police haven't reported any arrests tied to the shooting or any injuries.

"It's just a shame you can't go to a public event without having to worry about dodging bullets or worry about the drama," Brainerd resident Patrick Dunigan said.

People living near Brainerd High School spent last Friday night watching almost the same scene unfold from their porches.

"I heard several shots," Brainerd resident Ezra Harris said.

Several shots were fired at three spots near the school. Again, all while hundreds of students watched a basketball game inside. There were no reported injuries, but police arrested a 19 year old in connection with that incident.

Concerned neighbors hope the trend will stop before students get hurt, but have different theories on the problem and a solution.

"I think parents are not doing their job," Parrott said.

"Better planning for this type of activity. More officers to be at the games," Harris said.

Just about 15 minutes after gunfire was reported at Tyner Friday night, Chattanooga Police say a 17-year-old showed up at local hospital with a gunshot wound, but he wouldn't say who shot him where or why.

Police say they can't connect the two incidents and say it's tough to investigate when the victim gives such limited information.
