Husband of missing woman speaks out from a jail cell

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -- Guards rolled Tom Wilkes into the interview room at the Hamilton County Jail in a wheel chair Thursday. He receives dialysis every week and recently had surgery after complications from treatment for prostate cancer.

He says he thinks about his wife Dana Wilkes, 48, every day. "It took me 34 years to re-marry, took me 34 years to find somebody to trust with my life and it was her," says Wilkes. "We just clicked, just like Forrest Gump and Jenny."

Tom and Dana Wilkes met at a dialysis clinic on East 3rd Street five years ago. At the time Tom was a patient, Dana worked there. Their relationship soon took a different turn, they became much more than friends.

"I romanced her for two or three months," says Wilkes. They were married in August and shared a Chattanooga duplex. In October Tom was arrested for multiple traffic charges.

He says Dana visited him every day she could. The last time they saw each other was the day before she went missing.

"She came to visit me, that was the last time I seen my baby," says Wilkes. "The next thing I know I was getting a phone call from my momma saying they found my wife's truck, they couldn't find her."

Dana's family began a search and a body was eventually found near the shoreline of South Chickamauga Creek. Investigators have not positively identified the remains but Tom says he knows its his wife. He identified two tattoos on her leg, Mickey Mouse and a butterfly.

"You gave me an angel then you took her away," Wilkes says crying.

Channel 3 asked Wilkes if he had anything to do with her disappearance. "Oh no, How could I, how could I? I've been here. I loved my wife," says Wilkes.

He says the last person who had contact with Dana was an old chess buddy with a criminal history. "I think he had something to do with something, he knows something," says Wilkes.

It may be awhile before anyone knows for sure what happened to Dana Wilkes. "She just was all around a good person. I don't understand why anyone would take advantage of her," Wilkes says.
