UPDATE: Finley Stadium rape case sent to grand jury
CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -- Devontavious Bryant appeared in session court Tuesday, charged in the October rape of a woman near Finley Stadium. Bryant's alleged accomplice, a 16-year old minor, has also been charged in the crime.
During Tuesday's testimony, an investigator described the condom wrappers and cellphone that were found at scene. The investigator questioned the victim, who described attack. She told him the attackers compelled her to perform sex acts at knifepoint.
A key piece of evidence will be a cellphone, which the victim says Bryant borrowed from her. The victim recognized a photo the cellphone took of Bryant and his alleged juvenile accomplice inside the City Cafe.
The two suspects were recognized after the Chattanooga Police Department posted security camera photos of suspects inside City Cafe.
The rape victim took the stand to testify, speaking in a low voice. She recounted her daily routine; leaving the Rush Gym for morning run before work. She said "I always listen to music while running."
The victim continued to describe the morning of the rape, saying she left the Rush about 5:50 a.m. and noticed two males on bikes. She noted their clothing and wig, and jogged to Finley Stadium when she was accosted by the two suspects.
The victim identified Bryant in the courtroom as the person who grabbed her. She then described how Bryant took off his clothes, with a condom in hand, to attack her. She also said that Bryant alone threatened to harm her.
She said the other attacker asked her what she would do for her life. "I said 'Leave me alone. I'm screaming' " the victim testified.
After awaking from passing out after the rape, the victim had to retrieve her clothes before being able to flag down a car for help.
Bryant, 18, is charged with aggravated rape, aggravated robbery and aggravated assault for an attack on a young woman jogging near Finley Stadium October 10.
A 16-year-old student at Washington Alternative School faces the same charges, but as a juvenile.
Investigators say that Bryant and the 16-year-old were sitting on bicycles by the side of the City Cafe, at M.L. King Boulevard and Carter, when they saw the woman jog by, wearing headphones from an iPod.
The two followed the woman, dragged her down an embankment, and raped her.
Security cameras from nearby businesses recorded the event, with the exception of the actual robbery and rape.
