AUBURN, Ala. (WRCB) -- Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart has interviewed for the open head coaching position at Auburn, according to a report from The Birmingham News and AL.com.

Auburn beat writer Charles Goldberg cited sources familiar with the school's search process who said the 36-year-old Smart spoke with school officials about the job Monday.

Smart's Crimson Tide defense has ranked as the nation's best in each of the last two years. He won the Broyles Award as the nation's top assistant coach in 2010; however, he has never been a head coach.
