Gruden's agent says Vols coaching rumors "just a fantasy"

UPDATE 3: and the News Sentinel are reporting this afternoon that Jon Gruden's agent, Bob LaMonte says Gruden was never had interest in Vols' job, and calls the reports 'fantasy'.

The agent for former NFL coach Jon Gruden said reports that his client had received an offer from Tennessee were from a "fantasy world" and that Gruden had no interest in the Vols' head coaching job.

"I haven't said anything (about the ongoing rumors) because there's been nothing to say," said Bob LaMonte, the Reno, Nev.-based representative for Gruden. "This, to me, is just a fantasy world."

LaMonte said he spoke to Tennessee Athletic Director Dave Hart for the first time this morning.

UPDATE 2: is reporting that "multiple sources told that Gruden was never offered a contract and that specific financial parameters were not discussed when Tennessee officials talked with him last week.

"We never sat down and scheduled a meeting. Coach Gruden declined a meeting," a Tennessee source told "Financial details weren't discussed because it never got to that point."'s report continees: Tennessee athletic director Dave Hart is expected to meet with potential candidates next week in New York City at the Hall of Fame ceremonies. Some of the names that have been mentioned as possibilities include Florida State's Jimbo Fisher, Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy, Miami's Al Golden, North Carolina's Larry Fedora, Louisville's Charlie Strong and UCLA's Jim Mora Jr.

UPDATE 1: Jimmy Hyams, Afternoon host on The Sports Animal in Knoxville, TN. WNML AM-FM tweeted this morning "Jon Gruden is out as UT candidate. Informed UT recently after phone talks last week. UT never offered contract, source said."

Hyams also tweeted: UT athletic director Dave Hart will continue to interview candidates in New York next week. We expect announcement betw December 6-10.

The decision about the new University of Tennessee football coach is in the hands of the man most Volunteers fans seem to want.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press has learned from sources close to the process that Super Bowl-winning coach Jon Gruden has been extended an offer to succeed Derek Dooley.

Sources confirmed that while details are still being negotiated, the university's offer is very lucrative and there is no firm deadline on a decision.
