More Hamilton County teachers seeking certification

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - Education officials say an increasing number of Hamilton County teachers are seeking National Board Certification.

According to the Chattanooga Times Free Press (http://bit.ly/W7sUt9 ), Hamilton County got its first National Board Certified teacher six years ago. Since then, 33 teachers have received the designation, and 27 are working in local schools this year.

Considered the highest teaching credential in the country, the national certification requires teachers to complete multiple assessments and submit several portfolios, including videotaped lessons, examples of student work and evidence of their accomplishments.

It can take up to three years as teachers critique their own lessons, perfect their portfolios and retake exams if necessary.

According to the newspaper, of about 3 million teachers nationwide, only about 100,000 have received the certification.
