CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) -- One of the biggest duals in University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling history had one of the worst starts head coach Heath Eslinger could have imagined.

Second-ranked Iowa opened with pins in the first two matches to quiet a capacity crowd and spark a 37-6 rout of the host Mat Mocs Friday night at Maclellan Gymnasium.

Chattanooga managed to win just two of the ten bouts against the sports' most decorated program, with Alex Hudson (149 pounds) and Niko Brown (197) winning by decision.

Eslinger was hoping for a 5-5 split in front of a sell-out crowd of 2,639, but was left disappointed.

"I think we left some on the table tonight, especially at 125, 141 and 174, and you never want to do that," Eslinger said. "But they're a great team. I guess if we're realistic, that's what they were supposed to do to us. But it's just not what we want to accept.

"We do not train to get beat. We train to win and that's the bottom line. I don't care who it is. I don't like it and its frustrating."

Top-ranked and two-time defending NCAA 125-pound champ Matt McDonough opened the night by quickly sticking UTC's highest-ranked wrestler, Nick Soto. McDonough went on the offensive right from the start, then quickly pinned his ninth-ranked opponent just 1:45 into the match.

"I think he relaxed. I don't think he knew he was in as much danger as he was and he needs to fix that," Eslinger said of Soto's loss. "I was definitely shocked by that. We're his coaches so we have to help him fix that and find a way for him to work through it."

Second-ranked Tony Ramos fallowed with a pin of Cleveland High product Marvin Lopez at 133, then No. 15 Mark Ballweg won a 9-0 major decision at 141 pounds over Bradley Central product Dean Pavlou to push Iowa's early lead to 16-0.

Hudson's win got the Mocs on the board, but Iowa (3-0) won three of the next four matches by major decision and got a come-from-behind win from Grant Gambrell at 174. Gambrell trailed Ooltewah grad Jake Young 5-1 late in the second period, but rallied to tie the match then win a 7-5 decision on a takedown in the final 30 seconds.

Brown, the reigning SoCon Wrestler of the Week, outworked Hawkeyes' starter Tomas Kira for a 10-7 decision before UTC heavyweight Kevin Malone was pinned to close the dual.

"I think we saw some areas where we need to get better," Eslinger said. "The last three weeks of competition really provided us an education in areas we need to work on and now we have three or four weeks to actually get back in the practice room and get better. We have great kids on this team right now that I believe will bounce back and we'll move forward."

Chattanooga (3-2) opened the day with a 49-0 rout of Cumberlands, which featured pins from Soto, Young, Robert Prigmore, Brown and Malone.

Iowa opened its season earlier in the day with a 27-12 win over No. 17 Virginia and a 52-0 shutout of Cumberland at Maclellan. The Cavaliers also beat Cumberland 38-6.
