East Ridge family to present petition for pet goat

EAST RIDGE, Tenn. (AP) - An East Ridge family hoping to keep their pet pigmy goat plans to present a petition to the City Council.

Oreo is mostly white with black splotches around his ears and weighs about 40 pounds.

Livestock is not allowed within the city limits and the council on Oct. 11 voted down a proposed exception for pigmy goats and potbelly pigs.

Owner Jeffery Viar told the Chattanooga Times Free Press (http://bit.ly/VIrmLz) the family isn't giving up.

The 8-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son went house-to-house in their neighborhood collecting about 70 signatures on a petition asking to let Oreo stay. They will present it to the council Thursday night.

The family lives less than a half-mile from Georgia, and Viar said they could relocate to keep Oreo.
