Athens Police writing more traffic citations in 2012

ATHENS, TN (WRCB) -- Police in Athens have been busy in 2012. A re-instated traffic program has resulted in almost 7,000 tickets from January to September of this year, up nearly 50% from 2011's total of 5,477 citations.

Police credit a combination of a lack of officers in the street for 2011 and a growing population in the area for the marked increase.

The force is now at full strength, and the regional statistics show that fatal crashes are down nearly 70 percent.
