Chattanooga, TN (WRCB) -- Brooke Johnson runs through the halls of The Bright School to the arms of her father, Chief Petty Officer Samuel Johnson, after a year of anticipation.

Johnson, a Lakeview High School graduate, has spent the last year in the Zabul Province of southern Afghanistan serving with a naval medical unit.

It's an area prone to attacks and where recently two Afghan police officers were killed by an exploding device.

Johnson says he treats several US and NATO forces who are victims to roadside bombs

He say rebel forces are no strangers to his care.

"Anyone that was injured in a combat zone, we took care of them."

Now his care shifts to his family.

He says the time away teaches him how to balance missing home and not losing his cool on the battlefield.

"You want to talk to them as much as possible but not too much because you get emotional and miss home," Johnson says. "You have to mix both with the mission and trying to keep up with your family."

Now that he's home he plans to keep his plate full with his family.

Brooke says her first order of business is catching up with dad

Johnson offers advice to anyone with loved ones in the military.

He says touching base back home will help you get though the time away.

"Just keep in contact. Email are great. Care packages are great. We carry pictures all the time. I have a picture of my son and daughter in my shoulder pocket. To see her now is like a dream come true."
