Attention homeowners: Pay your taxes

Posted: Updated:

ROSSVILLE, GA. (WRCB)  --  A Rossville homeowner fears she may lose her house because of unpaid taxes. "I'm struggling like everybody else," says Holli Currie.

The house Currie and her son have called home for the last 12 years has belonged to her family for nearly four generations. "My parents were actually married here," she says.

However, now she fears it could be taken away by the city because of hundreds of dollars in unpaid taxes, more specifically $294 dollars in 2011.

"We'd have nowhere to go. I've worked so hard to get this house, I've put everything in this house and paid it off," Currie says.

Currie's first warning from the city came in May. Since then a lien was put on her home, her credit score dropped and her efforts to find a full time job to make the payments is not going well. "I can't pay my bills because I don't have a job and I can't get a job because I haven't paid my bills," says Currie.

This week Currie says she got another letter. This time it states the city may begin the process to auction off her home if her 2011 taxes are not paid by the end of the month.

Sherry Foster with the city clerk's office tells Channel 3 once the levy and sale process starts it cannot stop and with $75,000 in unpaid taxes owed to the city, homeowners need to take responsibility.

Currie says she has tried to set up a payment plan with the city but Foster says they've never talked with her.

Foster went on to say drastic measures are not taken against homeowners until two years of unpaid taxes have passed and they will work with homeowners on payment plans. However, once that first year ends it's a lot more difficult.

Currie is now in her second year and her monthly bills continue to stack up. "Lights, water, I have a cell phone, car insurance, gas and food. That's pretty much it," Currie says.
