UPDATE: Police seeking two suspects in sexual assault case

Posted:

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) -- The Chattanooga Police Department is warning the public to be on the lookout for two men, who they say, attacked and raped a woman.

The 30-year-old woman was jogging along Reggie White Boulevard early Friday morning when it happened.

When the victim was jogging near Finley Stadium and the First Tennessee Pavilion, two men were watching and waiting to make their move.

Police say the suspects were able to sneak up behind the woman. That's when they attacked her and forcibly raped her.

"We go with friends. I don't walk alone. I walk with friends," says Heidi Hefferlin.

Hefferlin lives nearby and frequents the dog park.

"I've lived here since 2003. We have a family. We have two sons, and we love it. It's a great area," she says.

She says it's troubling to hear what happened.

"You know we have never seen any crimes like that, and it's a terrible shame. But when you live in a city, you do have to be cautious and be careful," says Hefferlin.

The victim was able to give a brief description of her attackers.

One is described as a black man, between 16 and 20 years old and between 5' 10" and 6' 2", with a thin build. He was wearing a yellow sweat shirt.

The other attacker is a black man, also between 16 and 20 years old, around 5' 7" to 5' 11", with an average build. He was wearing a dark sweat shirt.

Hefferlin hopes the two men are caught soon, so people can feel safe in the neighborhood again.

"I'm sorry this has happened. Of course, we hope the police are going to track this down and give us more protection. But, I hope people don't take that the wrong way," says Hefferlin.

The woman was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Anyone with information on this crime is asked to call the Chattanooga Police Department (423) 698-2525
