On October 15th, fitness expert and kettlebell trainer Lorna Kleidman comments on an article published by Psych Central that expresses exercise is an effective antidepressant.
According to Psych Central, numerous studies have indicated that regular exercise can help those with depression and states that exercising can be just as effective as antidepressant medication. Additionally, the article reveals that although exercise is most effective for mild to moderate depression, it may help some cases of major depression. “If you can avoid medication and exercise regularly instead, even better. Drugs can have serious negative side effects, especially when taken over a long period of time. Some studies even suggest that antidepressants can lead to chronic depression,” Psych Central reports.
The Psych Central article expresses that finding motivation may come easier if those with depression stick to exercises that they enjoy. According to Lorna Kleidman, creator of the kettlebell exercises program KettleX, “Exercising is absolutely a mood lifter. In my classes, I see my students working hard but still laughing and enjoying themselves. Exercising will leave you feeling empowered, confident and accomplished. It makes sense that it can help those suffering with depression.”
Although Psych Central affirms that medication can certainly benefit depression sufferers, the article reveals that some medications may have harmful effects. The article advises those with depression to consider exercise. The article concludes, “There is no one treatment that fits all. Ultimately, you are the one who knows your body and mind best.”
