Signal Mountain girls golf wins fourth straight state title

Posted: Updated:

MANCHESTER, Tenn. (WRCB) -- Haley Davidson already owns three state championship rings, but apparently that isn't enough for the Signal Mountain senior.

Davidson finished second as an individual Thursday to help the Lady Eagles erase a five-shot final-round deficit and win their fourth straight Class A/AA state team championship.

Signal Mountain's two-round total of 329 at Willowbrook Golf Club was six better than runner-up Macon County and ten better than third-place Grainger. Boyd-Buchanan finished sixth as a team at 362.

The four-year-old program is now a perfect four-for-four on the state's biggest stage. This year's team consisted of Davidson and fellow senior Marli Patten, along with freshmen Bethany Burns and Haley Buttram.

Davidson carded rounds of 80 and 81 to finish at 17-over 161, which was 15 shots behind state medalist Sophia Schubert of CAK. Burns finished tied for tenth with a two-day total of 168.

Chattanooga Christian's Anna Pope finished tied for sixth at 167, while Polk County's Lydia Triplett tied for tenth at 168. Madison Balthrop was Boyd-Buchanan's top finisher at 171.

On the boys' side, Notre Dame's Alexander Riddle finished runner-up in the individual standings at 3-over 147. He rallied from an opening-round 76 on Wednesday with a one-under final round of 71 Thursday.

Riddle had a chance to force a playoff with state medalist Sydney Chung (Madison), but a bogey on his final hole dropped riddle into runner-up status by one shot.

Chattanooga Christian's Scott Stevens, who was the first-round leader at even par 72, shot a 4-over 76 Thursday to finish tied for third at 148.

Signal Mountain finished fourth in the boys' team standings at 665, five shots ahead of fifth-place East Hamilton. Sullivan Baker shot 161 to lead the Eagles, while Tucker Venable's 164 led the Hurricanes.

Macon County won the boys' state title with a two-round total of 619. Runner-up Alcoa was five shots back.
