(WRCB) -- U.S. Representative Scott DesJarlais (R-TN) has been accused on pressuring a former mistress to have an abortion, according to a phone transcript obtained by the Huffington Post website.
The transcript, which the DesJarlais campaign provided to the Huffington Post, contained details of a phone conversation the pro-life candidate had in December of 2000 with his mistress, where he spoke about their affair and her resulting pregnancy.
The DesJarlais campaign responded to the story be portraying it as a politically motivated personal attack by their opposition. DesJarlais is running for re-election to Congress in the 4th District of Tennessee against Democrat Eric Stewart, a state senator.
"Desperate personal attacks do not solve our nation's problems, yet it appears my opponents are choosing to once again engage in the same gutter politics that CBS news called the dirtiest in the nation just two years ago," the campaign stated.
At the time of the phone call, DesJarlais was going through divorce proceedings with his then-wife Susan, which was finalized in 2001.
