DALTON, Ga. (WRCB) -- It may have been a foregone conclusion, but Northwest Whitfield and Heritage still had to earn their way into the Class AAAA state tournament bracket with wins in the Region 7-AAAA tournament Tuesday night.
The state's top-ranked Lady Bruins (25-3) used an eight-run third inning to blow out Cass 9-0 in a winner's bracket semifinal, while the third-ranked Generals (23-4-1) cruised past River Ridge 10-2 on the other half of the bracket.
The two teams, who clinched state tournament spots with those wins, will meet Wednesday night in the winner's bracket final. The Lady Bruins swept the two regular season meetings between the sub-region rivals.
Emily Boyd struck out 12 in a complete-game (five innings) one-hitter to lead Northwest, while Bayli Cruse homered and Ashley Conner drove in three runs to pace the Lady Bruins' offense.
Kristin West and Savannah Goldsmith each hit two-run homers for the Generals, who pounded out eleven hits in the five-inning affair.
Dalton and Cedartown join River Ridge and Cass in the elimination bracket to vie for the region's two remaining state tournament spots.
Dalton scored five runs in the final two innings to pull away from Pickens in a 7-3 win, while Cedartown used a two-run walk-off single to end Ridgeland's season with a 5-4 victory in another elimination game.
