Hixson 28, Tyner 19 CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) -- Gill Brown scored two touchdowns, including the game-clincher with four minutes to play, to help Hixson secure a huge 28-19 win at Tyner in a battle of District 6-AA unbeatens.
The victory sends the Wildcats (4-2, 3-0 in 6-AA) into another first-place showdown against East Hamilton (5-1, 3-0) next week.
Allonte Novene caught four pases for 129 yards and caught the game's first touchdown as Hixson built a 14-7 lead at halftime. Tyner fumbled the opening kickoff of the second half and Novene's 36-yard catch set up Brown's two-yard plunge for a 14-point advantage.
Kalan Hardley scored twice in the third to close the deficit to 21-19, but the Wildcats ate up six minutes of clock in the fourth quarter before Brown's second touchdown provided the final margin. Novene added an interception on the Rams' (4-2, 2-1) final possession to seal the win.
Signal Mountain 27, Notre Dame 20 CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) -- Reese Philips racked up 274 yards of total offense, including 100 on the ground, to help Signal Mountain move past the .500 mark for the first time this season with a 27-20 win at Notre Dame.
The win puts the Eagles (4-3, 3-0 in 7-AA) alone in first atop District 7-AA, and drops the Irish (5-2, 2-1) a game behind.
Signal Mountain scored 20 straight points on touchdown runs by James McClellan and Ben Philyaw and a Phillips to Austin Moon pass to take a 20-6 lead in the third quarter. After the Irish closed the gap on Alex Darras' 44-yard strike to Nick Chambers, Phillips hit Madison Byrd for a 27-13 lead.
Austin Bankston cut the deficit in half with a 12-yard touchdown run, but with just more than a minute left Diamez Franklin picked off a Darras pass to clinch the win.
Darras threw two touchdowns passes, including the game's first score to Kareem Orr, but the Irish were burned by 115 penalty yards on 10 flags.
Gordon Central 28, LFO 6 FORT OGLETHORPE, Ga. (WRCB) -- M.J. Reynolds threw for 261 yards and three touchdowns and Gordon Central scored 28 unanswered points to move to 5-0 for the first time in program history with a 28-6 win at previously unbeaten LFO.
LFO's Warriors (4-1, 1-1 in Region 5-AAA) dominated the first half, but mustered just two field goals for a 6-0 advantage early in the second quarter.
Reynolds finally rallied his Warriors late in the first half with a touchdown strike to Bryan Brookshire for a 7-6 lead at the half.
Reynolds carried that momentum into the second half, throwing for 166 yards and hitting Tyshaun Clemmons and D.J. Prather for scores. He also led the team with 62 yards rushing and added a touchdown on the ground.
