CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) - Anglers should clean and oil their reels at least once a year depending on how often they are used. "Keeping your fishing reels clean and lubricated will ensure they work smoother and last longer." says FLW Pro Jacob Wheeler
A Q-tip can be used to remove dirt and grime from your reel. Once it is clean, a Q-tip can be used to apply oil to areas that need to be lubricated.
Don't overdo it with oil, one drop of oil to all bearings and lightly oil the case for the casting brakes will be enough. Grease needs to be applied only to the main drive gear teeth and the levelwind of the reel.
There are many different lubricants available, but you can't go wrong using the lubricants sold by the company that made your reel. Never use WD-40 to lubricate a reel. WD-40 is a degreaser and will break down grease and oil on your reel.
